Project Description

Project Description

Touching Yellow is an exhibit that focuses on the sighted community's understanding of how the visually impaired perceive the world. The exhibit offers an interactive experience in a gallery space that include performances, video and simulations. The space consists of six rooms, each offering a different way to perceive familiar surroundings, such as a subway station or a street, through the eyes of a blind individual, as interpreted by the designer. Touching Yellow aims to raise awareness and overcome barriers created by assumptions and prejudice by providing a platform to educate and inspire people's imagination, senses, and thoughts about the subjects of sight and blindness.

The image shows a white room with a white wall and a white baseboard. Mounted on the wall is a grid of 16 square photographs arranged in a 4x4 pattern. Each photograph depicts a blue-tinted scene: some show snowy landscapes, some show buildings, and some show abstract shapes. The photographs are evenly spaced, creating a structured and organized display. The lighting in the room is bright and even, likely from artificial sources. The image shows two white line drawings on white paper. On the left, a girl with long hair wears a dress with a patterned hem and a pinafore-style apron. She holds a tray or plate in her left hand. On the right, a girl with short hair wears a dress with a dotted pattern. Both drawings are simple line art with no shading or color.A white relief sculpture of a woman with long hair, wearing a sleeveless top with dotted patterns, is shown against a plain white background. The woman’s left arm is bent and holds a bottle, while her right arm is extended forward. The sculpture is carved into the surface, revealing raised details of the woman’s form and the bottle’s shape.A white relief sculpture of a woman’s profile facing left, viewed from behind. The woman’s hair is composed of small circular dots. Her left arm is raised, and her right arm is bent at the elbow. The sculpture is mounted on a white wall, with visible lines and curves in the surrounding area.A white surface features a raised, textured pattern resembling a three-dimensional design. The pattern consists of small, closely spaced dots or bumps arranged in a grid-like formation. Curved lines and shapes are etched into the surface, creating a sense of depth and dimension. The background is a plain, light gray or off-white color, providing a neutral contrast to the white design. Two hands are shown holding open a white book with the word "Alice" printed in black on the page. The book is open toward the viewer, and the hands are positioned on either side of the open pages. The background is a plain white wall.A stack of white paper sheets rests on a white surface. The top sheet displays the word “Alice’s” in black text. The stack is positioned against a black background. The image is entirely white. The image shows a white rectangular box divided into two sections by vertical walls, each containing multiple square images arranged in rows and columns. The images are grayscale and appear to be printed on labels or cards, with some labels partially obscured by translucent sheets. The box is positioned on a white surface, and the lighting is even and bright, casting no strong shadows. The images within the box are mostly dark gray or black, with some lighter gray or white areas. No text or labels are visible on the images themselves.Three people are in a room with a white wall displaying many small square images. The person on the left wears a brown vest and dark pants. The person in the center wears a light brown long-sleeved shirt and dark pants. The person on the right wears a teal shirt and light-colored pants. The floor is white, and the wall is white with evenly spaced square images.A miniature figurine of a woman with long dark hair, wearing a teal sweater and light-colored pants, stands on a white surface facing a large, out-of-focus bookshelf. The figurine is positioned with its back to the viewer, facing the bookshelf. The bookshelf appears to contain books or similar items, though their details are blurred due to the depth of field. The background is predominantly white, emphasizing the figurine and the bookshelf. The image is heavily blurred, making it difficult to discern any specific details or objects. The colors are muted and blended together, with no clear shapes or patterns visible. The blurring effect obscures any potential text or graphic elements, making it challenging to identify the subject matter. The image displays a black background with white text that reads: "Please keep 2 feet away from the edge of the platform."The image is a diptych, presenting two distinct scenes. On the left, a person stands with their back to the camera, observing two large screens mounted on a white wall. The screens display images of people in a city setting. On the right, a person stands facing the screens, which show a woman in a red shirt and a woman in a black jacket. The person on the right also holds a white bag. The lighting in the left scene is dim, giving it a darker ambiance. The right scene is brighter, with more ambient light.A man with medium-length brown hair, wearing a black shirt, stands in the center of a city street. He is looking to his right. Behind him, a woman with long, dark brown hair and a black top is visible. To his left, a person with glasses and a tan garment is partially visible. Other people can be seen in the background, and cars are parked along the street. The scene is set near a building with large windows. Two white cards are shown on a white background. The left card is partially folded and displays three small holes near the top. The right card is unfolded and shows four small holes near the top. The website address "www.touchingyellow.com" is printed on the top right corner of the right card. Two business cards are shown side by side. The left card displays four translucent, faceted objects on a white background. The right card features a blurred image of a yellow taxi cab on a city street, with circular shapes superimposed over it. The text “Touching Yellow” is printed below both cards. Contact information for George Billis Gallery is included at the bottom.A bright, circular light source emits a warm glow against a dark background. The light appears slightly blurred or out of focus, with concentric rings visible around its perimeter. The background is predominantly black, with some faint, diffused light areas visible to the left of the central light source. The image shows a white wall divided into two sections. On the left, there is a line drawing of a rabbit facing left. On the right, there is a line drawing of a figure resembling Alice from Alice in Wonderland, also facing left. Below the drawings, lines of text are embossed or printed on the wall. The floor beneath the wall is white.
