Project Description

Project Description

A Glimpse of a Culture Through Food Hijaz is a book that introduces Americans to Saudi/Hijazi culture and history through food. A Saudi cookbook is a rare treasure in the United States. Unlike typical cookbooks that simply feature recipes, Hijaz incorporates stories that provide a new way of looking at a culturally rich Saudi Arabia.

An open cookbook displays two pages. The left page features a poem titled “My Hijazi Family” written in Arabic script, followed by a description in English. The right page includes a photograph of a table with sliced tomatoes, a knife, and white rice. Text below the photo reads “Fun Fact: We do not ride camels.”A white plate with a blue and gold rim holds sliced meat, likely beef, garnished with tomato slices, a lime wedge, and a green chili pepper. A piece of light-colored flatbread is visible to the left of the plate, and a lemon wedge rests on the table beside it. The plate is positioned on a white tablecloth, with a white doily or lace item partially visible in the background.A light wood table holds a vase of cream-colored flowers, a dark blue container with green apples, and a pink book with the word "hiya" written on it. A large white pendant light hangs above the table. The background is out of focus, showing a window with curtains and a portion of a dining area.A cookbook titled “Hijab: A Clump of a Culture Through Food” is centered on a light gray surface. Surrounding the book are various wooden kitchen utensils: a wooden spoon, a wooden knife, a wooden spatula, a wooden mallet, a wooden brush, and a metal whisk.A black and white portrait of a woman with dark hair pulled back from her face. She wears a striped v-neck blouse and a thin necklace with a dark pendant. Her gaze is directed slightly to her left. The background is plain white.
