Project Description

Project Description

East Side is a digital guide to explore East Asian cuisines in New York. There are many East Asian chefs and owners who believe in the fact that they can bring new cultural experiences to a different group of audience through authentic food from their home culture. I hope more and more New Yorkers, especially the ones who are foreign to East Asian culture and eager to try new things, could discover the same kind of authenticity I found in this city. The core product is a mobile website, which provides information in a welcoming and accessible way. The website offers tips of how to consume specific cuisines and their origins, as well as the stories of different restaurants and the people behind them. Accessibility is the top concern for this platform’s audience as they are learning lots of new things for the first time. Rather than presenting the East Asian contents in a traditional manner, I chose to approach the visual direction in a contemporary, open, clean and cheerful style. This choice of look and feel in font, color, and illustration also applies to the event design for East Side Food Festival.

Three smartphone screens display food menus from East Side. Each menu shows the name “Junzi” and a description: “Junzi Kitchen serves vegetable-forward, fully customizable Chinese bowls daily. Each individual’s need is fulfilled here with comfort and convenience.” The menus include “Top Pick,” “Top Pick,” and “Top Pick,” each with images of food items and menu options.A smartphone displays two sections: one with a bowl of food containing rice, meat, and green herbs, and the other with a video titled “Story of 886” showing a man seated in a room with purple lighting. The text on the left describes a popular Taiwanese street food made with braised minced pork and topped with cooked rice, noting its poor living conditions and lack of affordability for most people. The right section highlights the story of 886, a Taiwan’s international calling code concept by Eric Sze and Andy Chuang, aiming to fuse Taiwanese upbringing with American modernization.A collection of design elements for the East Side Food Festival includes white and purple color schemes, repeating patterns, and icons of Asian cuisine. The items include place cards, cups, a to-go cup, a small bowl, a chopstick set, a small container, and a purple apron with the festival’s logo. The background is light blue. The image shows a large indoor space, possibly a shopping mall or convention center, hosting the East Side Food Festival. Multiple white pop-up booths with purple trim and colorful graphics line the space, each displaying a circular logo with a stylized “E” or “F”. People are walking around and browsing the booths. The ceiling is white with exposed structural elements, and large purple banners reading “EAST SIDE FOOD FESTIVAL” hang from the ceiling. The floor is a light-colored material, possibly tile or concrete.A woman with dark hair pulled back in a bun walks past three vertical digital displays mounted on a brick wall. The displays advertise the "East Side Food Festival," with dates from Monday, February 17 to Saturday, February 29, 2021, at the Westfield World Trade Center. Each display features a purple banner with white text and icons. The rightmost display shows a bowl of food with meat, vegetables, and sauce. The leftmost display shows a grid of colorful icons. The middle display has a circular design with light blue circles. The rightmost display shows the number 886.
