Sperhacke Makes Design Fashion

Sperhacke Makes Design Fashion

By Nigel Sielegar

FilterSkirt / FilterFan is the latest project by Tatiana Sperhacke (MFAD '03) to merge design and fashion using repurposed materials. The designer collected, washed, dried and saved paper coffee filters that otherwise would go to waste. Over a hundred filters were hand stitched and transformed into a skirt and a hand-held fan that presented a new perception of the coffee filters. Her work respects the material original shape and characteristics.

Fashion photography was used to communicate her concepts even further. The art direction focused on the use of natural materials that referenced coffee such as brown make-up used like a tribal body-paint (face and neck, hands and feet), wooden shoes, and rustic wood as a base for the model.
