Garrett Fowler dropped by the MFA Design studio to talk about his career, look at work, and offer advice to first-year students. Holding various leadership positions building design teams over the years at top-tier companies, he founded his own talent and recruiting firm byG in 2020.

I’m Garrett. Leaver of long voice notes. Unapologetic Mama’s Boy. Double fire sign. Big karaoke
fan. Tattoo fiend. Archivist. Aesthete. Injury-prone. Recovering maximalist.
Once upon a time, I worked at places like Instagram, Airbnb, and Taco Bell. At two of them, I
hired world-class design talent. In 2020, I spent most of my days doing breath work behind an
N95 mask and, yet, somehow managed to start a boutique talent agency called byG. Fast
forward half a decade and byG advises and builds teams for some of the planet’s most exciting
brands, startups, and design studios.
It really does take a village. I’ve consistently had the privilege of working with a cast of otherworldly, talented humans who have taught me everything I know. On the not-so-sexy days, I encourage you all to remember that gratitude is how we take our power back.
